Former South Yemen President To Continue to Call for Secession

Ali Salim al-Beidh, who was born in 1939, was the president of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) and the secretary general of the Yemeni Socialist Party that ruled from 1986 to 1990. It was Beidh who signed a unity agreement with the Yemen Arab Republic's (North Yemen) President Ali Abdullah Saleh, establishing the Republic of Yemen on May 22, 1990. On May 21, 1994, a war broke out between the two sides and ended on July 7 of the same year with the defeat of the south, as northern forces took control. بقلم:  هيثم مزاحم ، المونيتور   نشر   مايو 27 . علي سالم البيض (1939)، هو رئيس جمهوريّة اليمن الديموقراطيّة الشعبيّة (الجنوبيّة) والأمين العام للحزب الإشتراكي الحاكم بين عامي 1986 و 1990، وهو الذي وقّع على اتفاقيّة الوحدة مع رئيس الجمهوريّة العربيّة اليمنيّة (الشماليّة) علي عبد الله صالح بهدف تأسيس الجمهوريّة اليمنيّة في 22 أيار/مايو من العام 1990. لكن في 21 أيار/مايو من العام 1994، اندلعت الحرب بين الطرفَين وانتهت في 7 تموز/يوليو من العام نفسه بهزيمة الجنوب وسيطرة قوّات الشمال. وفي 21 أيار/مايو من العام 2009، واستجابة منه لدعوات "الحراك الجنوبي"، أعلن البيض عن سعيه لفكّ الارتباط بين جمهوريّة اليمن الديموقراطيّة الشعبيّة التي يمثلها باعتباره رئيسها عند توقيع الوحدة والجمهوريّة العربيّة اليمنيّة. في مكتبه في بيروت، التقى مراسل "المونيتور" البيض وسأله عن مطالبته بفكّ الارتباط وموقفه من الفيدراليّة والحوار الوطني، بالإضافة إلى العلاقة مع الحوثيّين وإيران والسعوديّة والولايات المتحدة وروسيا. The continuation of violence with the warring parties using mortars and heavy weaponry for the first time has raised concerns that it could escalate into a new civil war as a spillover of the Syrian civil war.
