It appears that the reestablishment of relations will not occur anytime soon. There are numerous impediments preventing the normalization of relations between both countries. One main obstacle to reestablishing relationship with Iran, is the US State Department’s concern about what it calls "Iran's support of terrorism”; particularly anti-Israel groups. Another is the US claim of Iran's pursuit of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). The United States is unlikely to lift sanctions against Iran unless it believes that the latter has ceased all activities in the aforementioned areas.
